Define Recruitment and Selection. What are the main differences between Recruitment and Selection.



Recruitment: 

Taylor:- "Recruitment is the process of locating, identifying and attracting capable applicants"

Flippo:- "Recruitment is a process of searching for prospective employees and stimulating and encouraging them to apply for jobs in an organization."

Dale Yoder:-   "Recruitment is a process to discover the sources of manpower to meet the requirements of the sttafing schedule and to employ effective measures for attracting that manpower in adequate numbers to facilitate effective selection of an effective working force.  "

Selection: Selection is the process of putting right men on right job. It is a procedure of matching organizational requirement with skills and qualified people.

Dale Yoder:- "Selection is the process by which candidates for employment are divided into class- those who will be offered employment and those who will not."

David and Robbins:- "Managerial decision making process as to predict which job applicants will be successful if hired." 


Process of Recruitment And Selection

Following are the steps in recruitment and selection process


  • Taking recruitment
  • Searching CV's through database and other sources
  • Internal screening and short listing
  • Scheduling interview
  • Selecting candidate
  • Negotiation
  • Joining follow up

Difference Between Recruitment and selection

  • Recruitment is an activity of establishing contact between employers and applicants whereas Selection is a process of picking up more competent and suitable employees.
  • Recruitment's objective is to encourage large number of candidates for a job but Selection's objective is to find out suitable candidates and reject unsuitable ones.

  • Recruitment is a positive approach and Selection is a negative approach.
  • Recruitment's basic purpose is to create a talent pool of candidates to enable the Selection of best candidate but the basic purpose of selection is choose the best candidate.
  • Recruitment techniques does not involves very intensive skill but Selection techniques require specialized skills.
